What does it mean to be a maker?
Dabble Cares is committed to empowering kids to see our city as both their playground and classroom, and we strive to offer programming that positively impacts communities across Chicago. While we love to see the end results of all the cool stuff we dream up with our partners, really we're all about the process. Engagement is the only thing that matters.
What are you doing in the Maker community?
For centuries, the people of Japan annually celebrate the tradition of Tanabata, or the Star Festival, by writing their wishes on colorful paper streamers and hanging them on bamboo branches for the universe to answer. In a similar fashion, each Nettelhorst Elementary student has tied a piece of fabric to fence as a tangible display of their intentions to create a better place in which to live and play.
This year, all the students have also posted notes on the trees surrounding the school expressing their hopes and wishes.
To kick off the National Week of Making, Dabble Cares, Pete Hill of Hands-on-Training and Catalyze Chicago will be shepherding the next phase of the Nettelhorst Hope Tree project...Operation Hope Drops, a super cool, super secret earth friendly art installation (Shhhh, we're riffing on rainworks).
Chicago is a city built on manufacturing and engineering ingenuity. "We made a name for ourselves as a trading powerhouse and pioneered the great railroads that shaped our fledgling nation," Catalyze reminds. "We reversed the flow of a river, built the first skyscraper, split the atom, and threw the greatest World’s Fair in history. We are a tough and resourceful breed, persevering through harsh winters, the Gangster Era and a fire that burnt the city to the ground."
We're excited to show the country what makes Chicago the Greatest Maker City on Earth!
