What does it mean to be a maker?
A maker is a person who creates new or improves on existing products or services to make the world a better place. Makers also create jobs for the people involved in those activities. In the past, makers have worked with creating physical products. With the advent of the digital age, makers have devised a wealth of new services by organizing & presenting information in new and beneficial ways. I created the Medical Fitness Network to help people with chronic disease/medical conditions live better lives through exercise, while creating more jobs for fitness professionals, allowing them to be part of the healthcare team.
What are you doing in the Maker community?
The Medical Fitness Network (MFN) provides a free online resource directory for consumers to locate qualified fitness & allied healthcare professionals who offer services for those with chronic disease/medical conditions.
There are 100 million baby boomers that make up about 30% of our nation. As this population ages, we are seeing a significant increase in obesity, chronic disease & individuals with multiple medical conditions. According to the (CDC), 80% of older adults have one chronic medical condition, & 50% have 2 or more. Public health efforts to promote health & functional independence are critical strategies in helping older adults stay healthy & live independently. Regular physical activity is one globally accepted strategy to promote and preserve health. Developing a plan for regular exercise can be difficult and people with chronic medical conditions have an even greater challenge.
The MFN donates its service as a database management company to medical & health organizations that provide public support & do not offer any resources to find these types of professionals.
Who are some other Makers you admire and why?
Sergey Brinn, Larry Page -Google
Mark Zuckerberg - Facebook Both these companies show how information can improve the quality of life for millions of people. They also demonstrate that companies can be very effective when they give away their main product at no charge. While my submission, the Medical Fitness Network has followed their lead by giving our services for free to Medical Health Organizations and consumers, we only hope to create enough revenue to grow the platform & cover our costs.
